USL changes its English entry requirement after WASSCE 2026

Published 2 November 2026, updated 4 November 2026 by the Sabi team.

The University of Sierra Leone (USL) has changed its English entry requirement after the poor WASSCE 2026 English results: a C6 is accepted for most degree programmes and a D7 for diploma programmes, at Fourah Bay College (FBC) and IPAM. USL's Director of Communications confirmed this to iVerify on 3 November 2026. Law at FBC and all COMAHS programmes have not changed.

What grade in English do I need for a USL degree?

A C6 at FBC and IPAM. That is the same grade USL asked for in its 2026/2027 entry rules before this change. So if you have a D7, this change does not open a degree place for you.

What grade in English do I need for a USL diploma?

A D7 for diploma programmes at FBC and IPAM. D7 is a pass, not a credit. Before this change, USL asked for a C6. This is the main change for students.

Which programmes have not changed?

The Bachelor of Laws (LLB) at FBC, and all programmes at the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS). Their entry rules stay the same.

Why did USL change the rule?

Because English results were very low this year. Only 9.77% of candidates got a credit (A1 to C6) in English in WASSCE 2026, the Minister said when the results came out.

Does this cover certificate courses, and will it last after 2026?

We could not confirm either point from two sources. Ask the USL admissions office before you apply.

What is the deadline to apply?

Check the USL admissions portal, admissions.usl.edu.sl, for the deadline and the full rules for your programme. Do not leave it late.

What should I do next?
